A Charlotte child got 14 root canals and stainless steel crowns on the same day in 2003.  The child’s mother sued the dental clinic and three dentists, claiming the treatment of her child “fell below the accepted standards of dental care.” On the day of the child’s multiple root canals, she was tied down to a “papoose board” and her mother was prevented from being in the room with her child during the dental work.

The lawsuit came about a week after the clinic agreed to pay $10 million to settle allegations that they made fraudulent claims to the Medicaid program for unnecessary work on lower class children.  According to documents, at least eight children have had multiple teeth extractions and root canals during a single appointment at the clinic.  Although the clinic agreed to pay the $10 million to avoid expensive litigation, they still deny the original claims.
